Mail to Virginia Tech students who reside in residence halls is delivered to a numbered, locked mailbox. Some residence halls have mailboxes located in the buildings, while others have mailboxes located in adjoining residence halls.
Mailboxes are assigned to each student by Housing and Residence Life. The mailbox number is the same as the residence hall room number. Pritchard Hall and Lee Hall mailboxes have combinations. Combinations are assigned by Housing and Residence Life. Student should contact Housing and Residence Life regarding a lost or stolen mailbox key or any issues with combinations.
Students are asked to follow Residential Mail Procedures when sending mail.
USPS Delivery and Pickup
Mail is delivered to residence hall mailboxes Monday through Friday. As there are two students assigned to each residential mailbox a student's full name must be included on any mail or packages. If the student's full name is not included in the address, the mail or package will be returned to the sender. USPS Packages can be claimed at 150 Kent Street, Owens Hall room 23 during business hours. Outgoing mail is picked up daily from the mailrooms and must be deposited by 1 p.m. to assure that it is delivered to the United States Postal Service that day. Mail received after 1 p.m. is processed the following business day.
If a student receives a package via the United States Postal Service that is too large for their mailbox, Mail Services will email the student’s vt.edu account notifying them of the package’s arrival. The package can be picked up at the Owens Residential Package Window from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Packages sent via UPS or FedEx are delivered directly to the student’s room. Mail Services cannnot accept and sign for any item that express carriers are unable to deliver directly to a student. Please ask about delivery policies prior to selecting a carrier.
Residential Physical Addresses
Each residence hall has an individual nine digit code (ZIP + 4). The first five digits of each residence hall are 24061, and the last four digits are unique to each residence hall. To expedite delivery, do not include "Virginia Tech" in the address.
Example of correct address:
Student's full name
(name of residence hall), room XXXX
XXXX street address
Blacksburg, VA 24061-XXXX (plus four are specific to building)
Change of Address
The university maintains several different addresses for residence hall students: local, permanent, and guardian. These addresses come from the admissions application. The Division of Student Affairs updates and maintains the local (residence hall) address for residence hall students. It is the responsibility of each residence hall student to update and/or change his or her address (except for residence hall addresses) through Hokie SPA as soon as possible after the new address is available.
Housing and Residence Life returns the local address to the permanent address at the end of spring semester or when a residence hall student moves off campus during the academic year. Residence hall students who move off campus after their freshman year must change their address through Hokie SPA; otherwise, the permanent address will be considered the local address for all university mailings.
