First-Year Mail Tips

Welcome, Hokies!

Congratulations on starting your first year at Virginia Tech! As you settle in and get ready for the academic year, Mail Services is here to assist you with all your mailing and package needs. To ensure a smooth process, please follow these important steps:

Properly Addressing Packages and Mail:

When sending packages and mail to students, it's essential to ensure they are addressed correctly to avoid any delays or returns.

To help you address your packages and mail correctly, please reference the following webpage: How to Address Student Mail and Packages. This guide includes a detailed listing for each residential hall and instructions on how to properly address your packages.

Move-in Essentials: Pack everything you'll need for the first two weeks upon arrival. You can purchase the rest of your essentials locally or have them shipped to your dorm as needed.

Package Pick-up Locations: For receiving mail and packages, you’ll be using the student package lockers and the Owens Hall mailroom. Medications, perishables, electronics, and important documents will be routed to the Owens mailroom. When retrieving items from Owens Mail Room, you must have your physical Hokie Passport in hand to retrieve.

Prompt Pickup: Once you receive an email notification that a package has arrived for you, please pick it up promptly. This not only makes space for more packages but also prevents them from being returned to the sender if left unclaimed.

Perishable Items: Perishable items are placed in coolers upon arrival, but there are no freezers available for frozen items. Keep in mind that items you order can take 2-6 days to arrive, and some perishables may spoil due to transportation time on trucks and trailers.

Priority Package Form: If you're expecting important items like medications, perishables, electronics, or documents, please fill out the High Priority Package form using the Campus Resident Portal. This helps us locate and process these items more efficiently when they arrive at Virginia Tech.

Campus Resident Portal: Gain immediate access to a list of your processed packages, which includes details on pickup availability, location, tracking number, type, and arrival condition. Click here to access the portal, select "LOG IN WITH VT LOGIN SERVICE," and enter your Virginia Tech PID and password.

Email Notifications: You will receive an email from Mail Services for every item we process in your name. This email will inform you when and where your package is ready for pick-up. Please note that an email from Amazon or UPS indicates that the package has likely arrived at Virginia Tech, but our email will specify when it's ready for you to collect.

Stay Informed: Our website is continuously updated with essential information for the school year. Make sure to visit it regularly to stay up-to-date with notices and important announcements.

We hope this information helps you have a successful and enjoyable experience at Virginia Tech. If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to Mail Services. Welcome to Virginia Tech, and best of luck in your Freshman year!
